Wildgrain is a subscription-based food box of baked goods (and pasta). They offer both a vegan box, and a gluten-free box. It’s a half-baked idea – in a good way. You see, the bread that you get is par-baked. You keep it in the freezer, and then when you’re in the mood fresh baked bread you take a loaf out of the freezer and pop it in the oven for varying amounts of time depending on what you’re baking (none that I have seen are more than 30 minutes, most much less).
As I said, they offer both a gluten-free box, and a vegan box, but not a gluten-free vegan box. But it’s possible to get such a box, you just have to customize it yourself.
So what you do is you sign up for the gluten-free box, and then you customize it by selecting only the gluten-free things that are also vegan.
Those gluten-free vegan offerings at Wildgrain are listed below, along with their ingredients.
But first, I want to go a little off-script, so to speak: When you sign up for Wildgrain you get a freebie “for life” (meaning as long as you keep getting your Wildgrain boxes, you’ll also get the freebie in your box). For the gluten-free box you’ll get gluten-free (but not vegan) chocolate chip cookies. You can either give them away, or you can chat with the nice and surprisingly helpful customer service chat reps, and ask to have the freebie removed and a credit applied because you can’t actually eat the freebie. In my case, I then applied that credit to add the vegan croissants to my box because while I’m supposed to be gluten-free, I can have a little gluten occasionally without ill effect, and c’mon, fresh warm vegan croissants from my own oven?? Yes please, gluten be damned!
Here are the Wildgrain offerings that are both gluten-free and vegan. Note that there aren’t many, but to me, at least, it was worth it to put together a box to get that fresh baked gluten-free vegan bread (and it’s sourdough, no less!) As most gluten-free vegans will attest, the gluten-free vegan bread offerings at the store are few and far between, and those that are available generally have a consistence of cardboard, and, well, cardboard would taste better. Either that, or they are crazy-expensive. Or both.
Perhaps oddly, of the four things that Wildgrain does have that are both gluten-free and vegan (at least as of the time of this writing, in December of 2024), three of them are desserts, and two of those aren’t even baked!
