My most recent acquisition in my effort to reduce plastics is this set of stainless steel funnels. I LOVE them, and they even come with a cool little stainless steel strainer insert so that you can strain things directly into your jar, bottle, or cup! You can see them all in the picture at the end of this post.
In trying to reduce as much as possible plastics that come into contact with food, I realized that my beloved plastic canning funnel was next for the chopping block. My canning funnel is beloved because I store a lot of food in canning jars (which are glass! Yay!) I use canning jars to store dry goods such as beans, rice, nutritional yeast, and nuts, and I also vacuum seal them to store things in the freezer. So my canning jars get lot of use, as does my canning funnel (which is a funnel specifically designed to funnel stuff into canning jars, so it has a wider aperture than most other funnels, and the top is wider than the opening of the canning jar, making it much easier to pour stuff into the canning jar.
And of course, because they are stainless steel, they are also dishwasher safe.
In addition to the canning jar funnel, the set includes what I call a spice bottle funnel, because it’s the exact same size as the plastic funnel that I had that was specifically for filling and refilling spice jars.
And, ah, the strainer! What a delightful surprise this thing is. I hadn’t fully appreciated its utility – I’d never even seen one before. Here’s what the company says about it:
“When using a funnel, the need for straining is common. Our team pioneered this unique umbrella-shaped strainer, which is incredibly easy to install and remove, helping you effortlessly handle various residues. This design has attracted many imitators, which attests to its success. We take pride in creating such a practical tool that solves many problems for consumers.”
With all of this cool functionality, along with the “look ma, no plastic!”ness of it, you may be surprised to learn that this funnels+strainer set costs only $12.99!
By the way, I also replaced my plastic cutting boards at the same time, with wood composite cutting boards – the utility (and lack of plastic) of wood, but they can go in the dishwasher! I’ll be reviewing those in a few days after I’ve spent some more time with them.
In the meantime, you can check out the stainless steel funnels and strainer insert set here (again, this is not an affiliate link, the only money I make from any of this is through tips, because how can you really trust monetized reviews?):
